I’ve been predicting McCain as the eventual Repub nominee because (a) Repubs believe in seniority & Mad John has put in his years as a loyal suck-up to whichever Evil Overlord the RNC has enthroned and (b) McCain’s old & tired and the obvious Sacrificial Mutton-dressed-as-Lamb in a year when the Democratic Party is looking as unbeatable as the Dems ever allow ourselves to be. In this scenario, Mad John staggers through the next nine months of encroaching-depression-plus-military-meltdown-plus-jeebusknowswhat-environmental-disasters to get soundly beaten in November, and the guy he chooses as VP gets to run in 2012 on the “See, elect a Democrat & Armaggedon happens!” platform. Extra points if McCain’s VP turns out to be either Newt Gingrich or Tom DeLay, both of whom seem to be angling for the role…

Delegates, delegates, delegates. That’s the ultimate factor in the primaries, not voter percentages. McCain won 23 delegates total with Nevada/South Carolina. Romney won 18 delegates in Nevada. What these primaries did was to place McCain in a solid second place behind Romney. The biggest losers of the evening were probably Huckabee and Thompson. Huckabee gained only 5 delegates, and with the large group of Iowa delegates, is still in there, but it seems that he is losing momentum. Thompson is really fading away and I believe that we will hear a resignation speech from him sometime this week. Giuliani is still up in the air because of unknown delegates in the Northeast for Super Tuesday. However, a Florida defeat could sink him as well.

Start thinking about 2012, when our problems will include a super-intelligent army of giant seahorses pioleted by Aqua Al-Quaeda and President McCain’s cryogenic “brain hammock” tax credit proposal. Oh, and per usual..lasers.

We are getting so good a snapping defeat from the jaws of victory, we should just change the name of our party from “The Democrats” to “George W. Bush’s Banshee Bitches who get Stomped out on the Regular.”
