Pitkin, I’m afraid Aravosis has a long history as a complete and total asshat. Here’s the procedure:

1. Aravosis makes sexist/racist/spoiledrichwhiteguy post.

2. Many commenters object, some politely, some not so politely.

3. Aravosis wails, gnashes teeth, foams at the mouth at how cruel and vicious his commenters are, no matter how politely they’ve disagreed with him.

4. Suddenly, the comment thread in question goes from 600 comments to 20 oh-I-wish-I-could-be-as-perfect-as-you comments. Hundreds of commenters are banned for the crime of disagreeing with the holy one.

Oh for god’s sake, John, it’s not a gift certificate from grandma and all the grandkids should get the same. It’s intended as an economic stimulant and pragmatically, people below a certain income level are more apt to spend the money quickly than those who can afford to sock it into savings.

I wish the government would spend the money on infrastructure repair, but instead we have to go to the mall so that we don’t end up eating dirt down the road. Something like that. I’m no Econ major.
