Some would say that John McCain lied about his war record so he could cynically use it to his own political advantage. SOME WOULD SAY:
In all the tales of wartime courage peppering John McCain’s presidential campaign trail, perhaps the most outstanding example of selfless heroism involves not the candidate but a humble Vietnamese peasant.
On October 26, 1967, Mai Van On ran from the safety of a bomb shelter at the height of an air raid and swam out into the lake where Lieutenant Commander McCain was drowning, tangled in his parachute cord after ejecting when his Skyhawk bomber was hit by a missile.
In an extraordinary act of compassion at a time when Vietnamese citizens were being killed by US aerial bombardments, he pulled a barely conscious McCain to the lake surface and, with the help of a neighbour, dragged him towards the shore.
And when a furious mob at the water’s edge began to beat and stab the captured pilot, Mr On drove them back.
Nearly three decades later, a Vietnamese government commission confirmed he was indeed the rescuer and, in a 1996 meeting in Hanoi, McCain embraced and thanked Mr On and presented him with a Senate memento.
From that brief encounter to his death at the age of 88 two years ago, Mr On never heard from the senator again, and three years after their meeting, McCain published an autobiography that makes no mention of his apparent debt to Mr On.
It is a snub Mr On took to his death.
His widow, Bui Thi Lien, 71, said: “In his last years, my husband was very sad sometimes.
He would say, ‘Mr McCain has forgotten me.’
That’s how straight-shooting mavericks say ‘thank you for saving my life’, Late Mr. On.
Whether or not McCain believed Mr On is unclear.
But his refusal to acknowledge his heroism is likely to fuel other, more damaging allegations that McCain exaggerated elements of his PoW ordeal in Hoa Lo prison.
Phung Van Chung, 70, who was a Communist Party official at the time, claims McCain was quickly singled out for softer treatment, adding: “I found out he was the son of an American admiral, so the top people wanted to keep him as a live witness so they could use him for negotiations.”
Barack Obama must denounce Biz Markie. He’s scary.

If Sen. Obama wants to be president I suggest he not ever bring this subject up. How you can believe it would be politically advantageous for a presidential candidate to question a man who was held and tortured as a POW is beyond me. Secondly, why you want to see Obama, an honorable man, stoop to the level of the Swift Boaters is really beyond me. Nothing wrong with bloggers pursuing this story, but for Obama to raise the issue would be a disaster.

More importantly, why does that woman have a band-aid on her chinny chin chin?
March 29, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Mags,
At the Republican convention in ’04, people thought it would be funny to wear band-aids with purple hearts on them in order to make fun of John Kerry. Kerry got three purple hearts in Viet Nam for being wounded in action, and the prevailing Republican opinion at the time was that his wounds were not serious enough to warrant receiving a medal. So the conventioneers thought wearing a band-aid was hella hilarious.

Tweez,
Thanks for enlightening me. I thought she had a melanoma removed or something. But now that I know, that’s just ugly on so many levels.

I’d been working on getting that “Yum yum khh” beat down for the last couple of years and the Biz Markie video has helped immensely. Thanks.

Remember “war hero” McCain was shot down dropping bombs and napalm on cities and villages in North Viet Nam. He not only destroyed their infrastructure and food supply, but also killed and maimed innocent men, women and children.
What would Ameria do to such a person caught bombing one of our cities and turning it’s citizens into charcoal? Answer…He would be sent to live in a cage or sent to a foreign country to be tortured. (Sent to a foreign country because Bush has clearly stated “America doesn’t torture” …we farm that out)
To the Vietnamese McCain was a terrorist who deserved what he got! I say this to just remind you why McCain was a POW.

McCain’s POW experience is unassailable and out-of-bounds, at least until the transcripts are leaked.
Our best approach is still to attack him for being batshit crazy, and talking up his rumored habit of groping female journalists on his campaign jet, then claiming that he had been momentarily overcome by an episodic tropical madness known as “P’on Farr.”

You, sir, forgot to say ‘bitch!’.
But then, cocaine really is a very powerful drug.
Make sure that never happens again.

The senior ranking officer POW may have ordered that only the longest held POW
could accept release but that would have had zero effect on the actions of the
NVA jailers. It is also in the Uniform Code of Military Justice that any prisoner as
the duty to escape and return to duty if possible. McCain was chosen because his
Admiral father was Commander of all forces in the Pacific theater. McCain is damaged goods. McCain’s actions in many reports have been short tempered and worse.
