Heh.
In a defiant appearance before the Washington media, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright said Monday that criticism surrounding his fiery sermons is an attack on the black church and rejected those who have labeled him unpatriotic.
“I served six years in the military,” Barack Obama’s longtime pastor said. “Does that make me patriotic? How many years did (Vice President Dick) Cheney serve?“
Indeed.
He said his Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago has a long history of liberating the oppressed by feeding the hungry, supporting recovery for the addicted and helping senior citizens in need. He said congregants have fought in the military, including in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“My goddaughter’s unit just arrived in Iraq this week while those who call me unpatriotic have used their positions of privilege to avoid military service while sending over 4,000 American boys and girls to die over a lie,” he said.
My life was full and complete before I ever suspected that Rev. Jeremiah Wright even existed, so I’d be just as happy if he went into hibernation for the next 6 months or so. However, I do see two strong arguments in favor of him taking this rather novel “fuck you” approach:
1. Heh.
2. Indeed.

Wright can go fuck himself, big time.
So?

Is this appearing on the TVs? Because it sure doesn’t fit the approved narrative.

“My life was full and complete”
It shows in that satisfied dimple in your chin, those self-assured sideburns, and that simple but stunning haircut.

I am a huge Jeremiah Wright fan. Jeremiah Wright is a bad-ass with a rhetorical force few can match. He is right about a helluva lot of things, and if he thought at one point that AIDS was a government conspiracy, he’s no further off base than anyone like me who believed Iraq had WMD. (I was still antiwar, for multiple reasons.)

I have nothing to add at this juncture. Please continue.

I’m with Boronx on this – they better get the scary black man off the TV/Radio, because if people actually listen to him, they start agreeing with him. And then what does Whitey do?

The fuck you approach is my personal favorite, as well. And if it wasn’t Wright, it’d be something else. A bully doesn’t bully to improve you through valid criticism of your many imperfections. A bully bullies because that’s what bullies do. And the only thing a bully understands is a good hard punch to his smug fucking face.
(I’m totally gonna be the mom in the principal’s office going, “Yeah? Maybe your kid IS a douchebag, you ever consider that?”)
A.

Right on. Right on.

It’s a myth that Obama was hurt by Wright. Speaking from the numbers.

Another huge Wright fan here. Not sure why, except perhaps I detest the kind of smears that the two YouTube videos represent. 30 years of struggle reduced to a couple of minutes of out-of-context character assassination.
I have read, seen and heard many of his sermons, and I can’t find it in my heart to condemn him either as a bully or as an America hater. He and his church have done a great deal of good for a very long time in his community. He has also served two tours in the Navy and Marines during the Viet Nam war.
Like all Americans, he has the right to criticize this government, its’ wrong-headed policies and most especially, its’ sociopathic leaders.
This is probably going to sink Obama, even if he chooses to throw the Reverend completely under the bus. I think it’s too late for that now. I haven’t seen any reaction from Hillary on this, except that she criticized McCain for piling on. If that’s true, good for her.
I guess America is just not ready for a black President, even one as obviously capable of doing the job as Obama. I find this very depressing. It’s as if, by having a Black man as candidate for POTUS, we’ve turned the clock back forty years.

I know this is “old media”, but everybody needs to send letters to the editors of everything emphasizing the “how long did Dick Cheney serve” angle…..
I know, I know, call me Don Quixote…….

Well I didn’t think there were any WMDs, why? Because the evidence was flimsy, we HAD saddam in a bag, and the old ones we sold him would deteriorate over time. New ones would leave residues and other signatures which were not found. And I think HIV is an original zoonosis from Africa, as many completely non-American investigators have more or less conclusively shown.
Evidence based opinions, available now to you and your family.

[...] So Jeremiah Wright has acted like a jackass the past few days, and he may have acted supremely selfishly by hurting Obama’s electoral chances. Regardless, he may be a flawed man, but that does not undo all the good he has done over the years. I don’t recall know of any bloggers with thirty years of service to the poor and the indigent. Get back to me when Chris Matthews feeds hungry people for three decades. And even with all his flaws, Jeremiah Wright did give us this quality bit of entertainment. [...]

Only in America can a Rev. Wright be seen as a negative for a candidate and a Rev. Hagee seen as a positive.
