… slightly relevant:
Set aside Obamajeebus and obamajeebusism. Think about Obama as professional political candidate and Obamacorp as professional political organization. Inevitable bumps and gaffes aside, consider how remarkably and relentlessly efficient and smart and effective and competent Obama and Obamacorp are compared to McCain’s or Clintons or, of course, Bushco.”
Aside from the weird neologisms and misplaced apostrophes, this is pretty much what I tell myself when faced with unfortunate behavior like the Barrow endorsement or FISA wobbliness from the Obama campaign. If they’ve proved one thing, it’s that they know what they’re doing, running-a-campaign-wise. Inevitably, in a national campaign, the smart Democratic candidate is going to do things that piss me off — I’m going to vote for them anyways! Whether the Barrow endorsement was an attempt to push the GOP into more spending in safe states (if an Obama endorsement can help an inveterate blue dog like that, the guy must be running towards the center) or whether it had some other justification, whether the FISA compromise reflects sound political calculation or a craven casting-aside of principles or something in-between, at this point I’m going to swallow hard and trust the Obama campaign to do what it has to do to win, because I’ll tell you one thing: with a Democrat — any Democrat — in the White House, things will be a whole fuckload better than they’ve been. Will it be disappointing? Yeah, of course. A lot less disappointing than the events of 2000 to 2008 inclusive have been, though, regardless of what happens between now and November. The man could French kiss Joe Lieberman and become Godfather to Scalia’s nuclear devil grandchild and I wouldn’t like it, but I’d gulpingly assume he had a reason for it and he’d still have my vote, and my money.
Ahh, democracy.

But it’s kinda a fine line isn’t it? A lot of his followers enthusiasm is based on him being the ‘real thing’. Letting the cat out of the bag that he’s just another politician might dampen enthusiasm a bit, and it seems a tad early for that. But like you said, who else is the realistic DFH going to vote for?
June 25, 2008 at 9:46 am
Yep.
Nope.
Future Naders.
June 25, 2008 at 9:51 am
As for the Barrow endorsement, it is probably for the same reason that the SEIU and other unions are sending him dumpsters full of money – he is a lot better on working class issues than any Republican. One would never know it from reading netroots blogs, but most Americans are not over-educated 40-something DINKs making $90k/year who spend 50 hours/week blogging. I personally think FISA is an important issue; if I didn’t have health care, if I were making minimum wage, if I were on my 3rd tour in Iraq, I might rate it somewhat differently. And if squirrels were nuts they’d lick their butts. National politicians probably don’t feel that bloggers pet issues are as precious as, say, Kos does. This will happen, regardless.
June 25, 2008 at 9:56 am
I totally agree, and that sentiment along with the demographic trends that favor the Democrats should carry the day. Obama is developing a nice coating of teflon. The Republican as you know him will literally become an endangered species.
The remaining Conservative minority will become very frustrated and will continue to evolve into more extreme ideological voters. That’s for cultural conservatism, sadly economic conservatism like the destruction of the social welfare safety net and policies that support corporatism are still going strong because the wealthy have disproportionate favor in the construction of the law.
The law favors the the authors of the law, and currently is rarely the fruit of democracy.

That tears it! I’m voting for Nader! Besides, only he knows what’s blacks want, unlike that White-Talking fella who’s going to be on the Democratic ticket (unless some of the bitter enders on the Clintonista front decide that action should match their rhetoric).
Good times all around!

Left that sentence unfinished.

June 25, 2008 at 1:01 pm
my understanding of the Barrow endorsement is simple back scratching. Barrow endorsed Obama when it counted, and Obama is returning the favor — not doing so would seem politically naive.
June 25, 2008 at 2:54 pm
The man could French kiss Joe Lieberman
No, sorry. I draw the line at tongue. No tongue.
Well, no tongue for Lieberman, anyway.
June 25, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Reid pulls through, albeit only until July. Something tells me that by then, the GOP is going to be worried more about elections than this, so I think we’re “safe” with respect to retroactive immunity, for the time.
This is the second best option for stopping the current FISA bill. It would have been better if the bill came up for a vote and was plainly voted down (probably not likely). It would have been worse if the Democrats had to resort to a filibuster (very likely, but politically messy).
Cheers to Reid for delaying the vote. Cheers to all the Democrats in the House that voted “nay” last Friday. Tepid congratulations to Obama for getting a lucky break and not having to contradict his earlier FISA statements.

Well, I asked for my donation back (very politely & I don’t expect it to actually work) but I’ll keep the standard bumper sticker. I’m sorry, but $100 towards this guy’s tv ads looks like a terrible use of funds these days & it was based specifically on issues important to me that he’s proven himself to lie about. I well understand that they’re not priority issues for everyone, but they were the specific reason I supported him during the primaries. Donating to his campaign at this point would be like donating to my alma mater: I certainly benefitted from all the rich people who gave it money, but you know, it doesn’t need mine, & I can get WAY better bang for my buck elsewhere than adding to a giant endowment or a buying a microsecond of a tv commercial. Naturally, I’ll vote for him, as I’m not an idiot, but I needed to exorcise the “you complete fucking sucker” feeling.

June 25, 2008 at 5:13 pm
So Obama is getting out civil-libertarianed by Chuck Schumer these days. And this would be why I decided in 2007 to focus political efforts on issues instead of candidates to prevent myself from going insane.

I wonder how many people we’ll be like (most of) us?
I sent a note to Obama.com telling them “no more money” over this, along with my catchy new Obama campaign slogan, “Obama. Well, he’s better than McCain!,” which isn’t nearly as clever as the bumper sticker, but I hope sends a message.
I told them I had to send it to Telecom’s instead, so I could keep feeding my intertoob habit.
The point is I’m wondering if opting out of public financing isn’t going to wind up costing him if he keeps making decisions like this.
Great post, as always.

“…we’ll be?” Jesus. Bedtime alert.
Running a little hot over this, evidently. I’m no purist when it comes to politicians, but I’m a raving lunatic when it comes to the rich and powerful having different rules than me. A bridge too far.
The Man pushes my hot button once again.
Now, in my hopeless and seemingly unending naivety and cynicism, I wonder if Obama has figured out a way to cover his ass on this, politically.
Because I get it, politically, if he does, shameful as it is to me. Better still, I’ll think he’s cool again if he does. Maybe even cooler than I did before.
June 25, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Would a guarantee of filibuster cover Obama’s ass, assuming it was successful?
Help me out here. I don’t think Dodd or Feingold are in any political danger by doing it…
June 25, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Whenever I get misty over the thought of President Obama, I stop and remember the humongous ego someone must have to actually, seriously run for president. Regardless of their beliefs, this person has to be operating in a whole ‘nuther place from anywhere I’ve ever been or frankly want to be.
So ok, candidate Obama is having his sistah soljah moment. Eh, it had to come. Take it for what it is. If he feels compelled to have another one in the near future, then I may get a little squinty eyed.
But if absolute power corrupts, then absolute ego is it’s pre-requisite. Maybe my job (our job) is to remind President Obama of just how big he’s getting for his britches along the way and force him to come down to the earth the rest of us inhabit.

Good times.

I would be less bothered by the FISA thing if:
1. Obama had not actually promised to filibuster against any bill that contained telecom immunity waaaaaaaay back in teh prehistoric days of January. Now he’s not only not going to filibuster it, but he’ll vote for the damn thing anyway; and
2. I had not convinced myself that Obama actually understands that you don’t have to accept GOP issue-framing (”Oh noes!!!The FISA is broken!! It iz useless against Teh Terrists!!”) in order to fight the Republicans on the national security front.
The second one is my fault, but the first is all him.
I’ll still vote for him. But I doubt I’ll volunteer or give him money, because for me the number one issue of this campaign is not the war, nor is it the economy. It is the restoration of the Constitution, and the reversal of the damages done to it by the Bush administration. Even beyond the telecom immunity provisions, this bill expands presidential surveillance powers in ways that are not consistent with our right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure. And despite what he said in January, now Obama plans to vote for it, probably because he wants those powers for himself. But don’t worry – we can trust him.
June 26, 2008 at 10:23 am
Aside from making my Congressional phone calls, I’m pretty helpless. I’m not a multimillionaire with a corporate account and a raft of lobbyists, so I don’t really have a voice in the American political system. So instead I rely on denial and delusion. In this case, I’m PRETENDING that Obama intends to save his energy, not fight big expensive fights like this that don’t return big blocks of centrist votes, and instead that Obama intends to encourage 2009 legislation entirely repealing this FISA amendment and all its attached provisions.
I don’t really BELIEVE that’s going to happen, but it’s the only way I can convince myself that pulling the level for Limburger Cheese is actually pulling the lever for Roses.
