Joe Biden alludes to it:
Rick Davis, John’s campaign manager, said two days into the convention, he said “this election is not about issues.” That’s what he said. And everything I saw at the convention demonstrated that.
It was about how well placed — and boy she is good — how a left jab can be stuck pretty nice. It’s about how Barack Obama is such a bad guy.
It’s about how in fact, how in fact, they got great quips. Man, they’re like the kids you know when you went to school and you were very proud of the new belt or the shoes you had, and there was always one kid in the class who said, “oh, are they your brother’s?”
Remember that kid? That’s what this is reminding me of. ”Oh, I love your dress, was that your mother’s?”
You know what I’m talking about.
From LA Progressive:
“So Sambo beat the bitch!”
This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.
“It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.
Then, almost with a sigh, she added, “But that’s just Alaska.”
Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin.
Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “f**king Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.
But being openly racist is only the tip of the Palin iceberg. According to Alaskans interviewed for this article, she is also vindictive and mean. [...]
“Palin is a conniving, manipulative, a**hole,” someone who thinks these are positive traits in a governor told me, summing up Palin’s tenure in Alaska state and local politics.
“She’s a bigot, a racist, and a liar,” is the more blunt assessment of Arnold Gerstheimer who lived in Alaska until two years ago and is now a businessman in Idaho.
“Juneau is a small town; everybody knows everyone else,” he adds. “These stories about what she calls blacks and Eskimos, well, anyone not white and good looking actually, were around long before she became a glint in John McCain’s rheumy eyes. Why do I know they’re true? Because everyone who isn’t aboriginal or Indian in Alaska talks that way.”
“Sambo beat the bitch” may be everyday language up in the bush. Whether it – and the outlook, politics and worldview Palin reflects when she says such things in public – should be part of a presidential campaign is another thing altogether. The comment says as much about McCain as it does about Palin, and it says a lot of things about Americans who overlook such statements (as well as her record) and vote anyway for McCain.
Lovely.
… More on the LA Progressive story.

I may be one of the last Americans not raised in a compound to have had the original LBS as a children’s book. Setting aside the racial overtones, that book is a freaking ad for butter.
The weirdest thing is, the ethnicity of S in the book is pretty clearly Bobby Jindal’s.
I wonder when they’re going to break out the black Alaskan Republican.

Now hold on just a second, what Sarah Palin said was the truth. Obama did, in fact, beat Clinton.
This is where were headed if the Liberals win, folks. Even uttering a simple fact like the black guy defeated the woman is going to end your career..now, that’s something everybody already knows, but that won’t stop them. Thugs from the department of political correctness are going to come to your door and inform you that you can’t say that, you can’t show your face in society anymore.
They can’t have anyone speaking the facts, folks, they have to stop you from saying the truth, because if the truth gets out there… the American people aren’t stupid, they know the truth when they hear it.. if the truth gets out there to them, like I’ve been doing for these many years, the Liberal lose and they know it.
September 6, 2008 at 2:59 pm
It’s just a pretty filthy rumor being repeated about a VP candidate. I completely throw it out, and I’m sorry you accepted it at face value. There’s more than enough muck about Palin that is fully documented, without having to repeat this kind of filth.
September 6, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Wow, Googie galore: http://www.sambosphotos.com/
I very much remember Sambo’s. Although, I was pretty young back then, there was something about the theme that seemed kinda off. Many of them were converted to Baker’s Squares in the 80s after Sambo’s went bankrupt.
Anyway, I don’t doubt she said it. I hear worse from the Neander-cons all the time. It fits the mean-girl meme perfectly, and really, that is all that matters. The republicans think personality is their strength this election. I think they are wrong, but no one else is going to agree unless more of this stuff makes it into forwarded emails.
September 6, 2008 at 3:19 pm
I have a feeling that Rachel Maddox was correct when she claimed Plain would soon be dropping out. The National Enquirer is going ahead with stories about her affairs. I know it’s the Enquirer, but tell that to John Edwards:
Sarah Palin affair rumours are false, says John McCain’s team
September 6, 2008 at 5:25 pm
This is why the McCain campaign won’t let her do interviews, or stray from a script. She’s liable to call him Macaca.
BTW, this is a great line from Biden: It’s about how Barack Obama is such a bad guy. It just completely deflates these character attacks. Even people who aren’t fans are going to hear that and think, “Oh, yeah, he’s a real monster.” It makes the Republicans look like jerks for doing it.
September 6, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Nice.
September 6, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Balakirev does not believe in mixing the two dirts.
You know, it’s true. Palin’s lackluster record as governor and poor record as mayor should be more than enough to bring her down, without getting into picky little questions about her alleged involvement as a brood mother in a Satanic cult, or the *real* reason why she switched colleges four times in five years, nudge nudge wink wink.
I get it. It’s because low-information, uncommitted voters at the margin react extremely positively to policy critiques and high-mindedness, in the same way that high-information voters interested in politics two months before an election do; and because they’re turned off by appeals to the basest, most prurient rumors that political operatives can create. I get it. We are a better country than this.
Except, of course, the parts that aren’t.
September 6, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Arctic Arabs
That’s SOOOOO stoophead. They’re Arctic GOOKS, not Arabs. Arabs are Caucasian. Y’know: crackers.
You see, there’s a vast swath of the populace who never *got* that Homer Simpson was to be laughed AT not with.

OT:
I was thinking today that perhaps someone should write a book called “Maoist Conservatism.” How else can we explain their constant denunciation of elites and their insistence on a state of permanent revolution (they are after all running on a a supposed platform of “change” despite having been in power for 8 years.)
Community Organizers are the Capitalist of Maoist Reaganism. (I think I like that name better)

I just like to think that what we can negatively judge any candidate by what is proven, rather than one is alleged without evidence. This is just slime. If there were more to it, I suspect we would have heard a lot of it come out, already. What we have heard, in spades, are comments about her ties to the Alaskan independence movement and party, the unmarried, pregnant daughter, being for the Bridge to Nowhere before being against it, and many, many more such matters–which Palin continuously denies, despite the evidence. There it is: evidence. We’ll get her on that. If anybody wants to use slime to get Palin, they really should get a lot better at creating it than to show she’s incredibly insensitive to blacks. Now, start a rumor she actually tried to start an abortion clinic in her two-bit town: this is the kind of thing that would drive Republicans rabid.
September 6, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Hold everything. Do we have any way of assessing the credibility of this Charlie James of the “LA Progressive”? If this is the crap it may well be, it sure doesn’t help matters.
September 6, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Is it true that Palin wears a pentagram on her lapel?
What are Palin’s ties to Wicca? Is it true that her daughter Willow is named after a Jewish lesbian witch on television? Is it true that her daughter Piper is named after an unmarried mother and witch on television? Is it true that her daughter Bristol is named after a known site of witchcraft? Are there other missing babies?

Balakirev, I knew about Essie Mae Washington in the mid-1990s. No one reported on Strom Thurmond’s black love child until after he died, and they sure as hell never mentioned him and his first wife soliciting young male college students back to their place for “a little party” in the 1940s.
I’m not sure why the media overlooks this stuff, like they overlooked Jeff Gannon — I mean, we had a gay male escort fielding softball questions to W during press conferences? wtf? — but it has, and it continues to do so. It would be incredibly damning if there were camcorder footage of Palin saying “sambo” or “macaca” or “that lesbonic dyke Hillary”, and certainly someone with Palin’s political views is predisposed to say things like that, because those views are damaged sorry things.
But the media doesn’t often do due diligence on those issues. If anything, they do the opposite. This is why McCain is hailed as a paragon of character, and not a dimwitted schmuck who crashed plane and plane after plane before making more propaganda for the Vietnamese than Jane Fonda ever did. And what about that “Flame of Florida”? which marriage did that affair with an exotic dancer take place? is this when McCain started his interest in women’s issues?
That sound you hear, my friends, is the sound of crickets.
September 6, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Also, Sambo was a mainlander from India: Caucasian. But that only proves her point, my friends, because many persons from India are Muslim. Especially if the live in Pakistan.

Stupidity isn’t male vs. female. Stupid is, as stupid does….
September 7, 2008 at 5:39 am
Tirebiter, any idiot can come up with red meat for their own side. Here’s one:
And I haven’t even had my coffee yet.
But coming up with something that burrows like a botfly larva under the other side’s skin, that’s something harder. The GOP likes attacking an opponent’s strengths: Gore, his intellect; Kerry, his war service. With McCain, that would be his prisoner of war status and his perceived masculinity; with Palin, that would be her so-called Christianity and her perceived sexual allure — see that freakish Will Wilkinson article, for instance.
Since I’m not a wingnut — since even my ethnic white huntin’ and fishin’ blue-collar relatives think that W should be sent to the dog food plant — I’m not quite sure what will start gnawing at the subcutaneous fat and what won’t. Palin as leader of a Satanic coven is probably stretching things a bit (but a lot of people still think Obama worships an Arabic moon-god, praying for the death of whitey). Palin as someone who was extremely wild in college might not be; Palin as someone with an exotic sexual background might not be. That sound you heard Wednesday night was millions of talk radio listeners getting an erection without the aid of pharmaceuticals for the first time since the invasion of Iraq. They’re also the same bloc of people that use a person’s sex life as a test for political office. Remember, it was McCain’s camp that brought up Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.
Is this fair, or nice, or kind? no. But it’s plausible, and it’s already happening.
September 7, 2008 at 6:38 am
The thing about political slime is, it’s no good if it’s the sort of thing that horrifies you and your friends, when you weren’t going to vote for that person, anyway. It has to be the kind of slime that turns away that politician’s supporters, or better still, sends them into a frenzy of gobbling defense. Slime turns my stomuch in any case, it’s true, but since the Republicans use it to turn their opponents’ strong points into weak ones, the Democrats should use it right back. (Doesn’t mean I’ll like it. I won’t. But winning by playing the game is better than not winning at all.)
Sliming her with lies, or even the truth, about these Sambo remarks? It goes nowhere. Palin needs to be attacked on what her various constituencies perceives as their core values. Oh, if only she could be labeled a Wiccan, enough to make it stick! That would be a lovely example of ironic justice served up on a steaming bed of Rove.
September 7, 2008 at 8:24 am
Balakirev, etc. – You are smart to question the sourcing (I posted this mistaking LA Progressive for ‘LA Weekly’ which, while perhaps not the pinnacle of journalism, I had at least heard of.) OTOH, it is – unlike the wild tales of secret parentage on reads on far-out liberal blogs like Andrew Sullivan’s – not a particularly extraordinary claim. Are you surprised to learn that right-wing Alaskan politicians lack racial sensitivity in their private (and semi-private) moments together? Or that successful politicians in Alaska (or anywhere) are not merely nice, God-fearing hockey mom ingenues but, rather, calculating and manipulative? I’m not. It would be about the least surprising thing I’ve learned about Palin (and McCain’s judgment) since the story broke. Maybe I’ve just forgotten how to be skeptical over the past 5 days. Alaskan secessionist connections? Pull the other one.
Regarding ‘tactics’ (to the negligible extent that preaching to the choir here constitutes ‘doing something’) – the Rovian McCain campaign is on record as saying they want the election to be about personalities, not issues. Rove’s first rule of smearing is: thou shalt undermine thy opponent’s strength. If they intend to win on ‘character’, that’s where the saboteur should work.
September 7, 2008 at 10:57 am
If Alaska secedes, I’m moving there.
September 7, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I’m sorry, but that LA Whatever article reads like it came from The Onion.
On the other hand, I’ll giggle myself sick when she eventually does have her Macaca Moment. And she will. Some people can’t help themselves, despite the best efforts of McCain’s handlers.
He just doesn’t have enough handlers. He can’t.

If you need some motivation,
http://www.gallup.com/poll/110050/Gallup-Daily-McCain-Moves-Ahead-48-45.aspx
McCain’s 48 is the highest he’s received since March. 45 being the mendoza line, Obama had always been at 45 of more, McCain at 45 or less. We need to regain the mo’.
September 8, 2008 at 12:16 am
If as a 25-year-Alaska-resident (Anchorage) I can’t get any backup from long-time Wasilla residents who knew Sarah and her kids for years, I doubt that article is true.
At the very least, it was incredibly irresponsible for them to publish it because I KNOW he’s got nothing besides this “Lucille,” if she exists.
And I’m as “pro-Obama/anti-Sarah” as it gets.
September 8, 2008 at 8:42 am
“low-information, uncommitted voters”
I’m not sure if “low information voters” is this campaign cycle’s best euphemism, but it’s sure getting a lot of mileage. I kinda like it — clinical-sounding without the opprobrium of “dumbasses”.
September 8, 2008 at 9:36 am
What are Palin’s ties to Wicca?
It would be irresponsible not to speculate.
