The media has paid far too little attention to John McCain’s pledge in April to cut off all aid to Israel. Shortly after McCain issued that promise to completely abandon Israel, the McCain camp was forced to backtrack publicly due to pressure from various campaign advisors. But that was for purely cynical, campaign-related reasons, not due to a change of heart. If elected, there is little doubt that McCain will swiftly implement a clean break with Israel.
In fact, it is the ultimate goal of both sides of the GOP ticket. How can I know this? The evidence is pretty clear.
First, Sarah Palin’s church patronizes preachers from a group that the Anti-Defamation League has claimed targets “Jews for conversion with subterfuge and deception.” Speaking of such preachers, one recently had these charming things to say about the people of Israel:
Brickner [the preacher] also described terrorist attacks on Israelis as God’s “judgment of unbelief” of Jews who haven’t embraced Christianity.
“Judgment is very real and we see it played out on the pages of the newspapers and on the television. It’s very real. When [Brickner's son] was in Jerusalem he was there to witness some of that judgment, some of that conflict, when a Palestinian from East Jerusalem took a bulldozer and went plowing through a score of cars, killing numbers of people. Judgment — you can’t miss it.”
In the past few days, Palin has taken to quoting Westbrook Pegler, a virulent anti-Semite, whose hatred for Jews was so extreme that even the John Birch society found him to be a bit on the extreme side – and it takes a lot to move the anti-Semitism needle with the Birchers.
It’s an odd source because Pegler, who moved further right as his career went on, ended up very, very far out. Frank notes that he talked hopefully of the assassination of Franklin Roosevelt.
He was also known for what Philip Roth described as his “casual distaste for Jews,” which had become so evident by the end that he was bounced from the journal of the John Birch Society in 1964 for alleged anti-semitism. According to his obituary, he’d advanced the theory that American Jews of Eastern European descent were “instinctively sympathetic to Communism, however outwardly respectable they appeared.”
Can we afford to ignore these warning signs any longer? Ask John McCain why he wants to cut Israel off entirely. Ask Sarah Palin why she finds inspiration in the words of unrepentant anti-Semites. Ask McCain and Palin if they, too, have a casual distate for Jews, or is it something more serious.
The American people deserve answers.
[UPDATE: Top American Jewish leaders are abandoning the GOP ticket citing Palin's "scary" views. Palin's thinly veiled anti-Semitism, coupled with McCain's hostility to Israel, could very well cost votes in Florida and other key states. (via The Benentron 3000)]

if Democrats fought like Republicans, a version of this argument would simultaneously appear in Paul Krugman’s column today, in a press release from Pelosi’s office, from the mouth of a sitting U.S. Senator appearing on “Hardball” and at a press conference held by CAP.
and repeated ad nauseum daily for the next 55 days.

That is just rat cockteasing, unless you happen to have a good email list of low-reality-quotient AIPAC cannon-fodder to whom to send it. And unless you put a request for money (and pressure on the specific Media which Are Covering For McCain) at the end of it. But you sure do get points for style with that first linked claim!

In all seriousness: after watching the R convention, specifically the stuff about the secular “coastal urban elite media” in opposition to the stout and hearty yeoman of the Christian heartland luxury golf course-adjacent subdivisions, I thought “well, so much for courting the Jewish vote”. Now, I don’t know that this was intentional, and I think it’s perfectly valid in the American context to interpret “Jew” as a code word for “secular urban educated metrosexual liberal” as the other way around, but that’s how I read it. Red state cultural populism is nothing if not unsubtle, all its enemies are the same, which is how blackness can be evidence of elitism and having a black pastor makes you a Muslim and reading a book will turn you gay, but still. That was my honest impression.
September 11, 2008 at 1:51 pm
That only supports my point…

Obama is just four more years of Bush.
The real change is Palin!

If I knew McStain would cut off aid to Israel, he’d have my vote in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately, he’ll suck AIPAC/Likud dick like any other American politician with national aspirations, including Obama and Hillary, and the 50-year screwing of American taxpayers, soldiers and sailors will continue apace.
Biggest welfare state evah. They’re not NATO members, they have no stategic value to us, no oil, and have never done anything useful for us. They sell our tech to the Chinese and other weapons to our enemies, spy on us and steal our secrets military, corporate and otherwise, and use said aid to barbecue and fill Palestinian civvies with lead…been nothing but trouble for the US since day 1. Stalin at least could figure this out…no such luck for us.
We’d be better off with Iran as an ally- they’ve never attacked us (i.e. USS ‘Liberty’) and they’ve got loads of crude. But the religious nutcases and Likudnik dupes and fellow travelers won’t hear of it…
Let someone else offer them a tit to suck on…as a taxpayer, I’m done. Bah.
That said, fuck McCain/Palin.

I’m making my “October Surprise” prediction:
Palin leaves the ticket to “spend more time with my family”, citing the strain of campaigning upon new-born son.

I only read the first few lines of this…
McCain was forced to backtrack publicly due to pressure from the Viagra campaign?
That’s news we can use, my friends…

Still not enough. We need a campaign to clog the Internets Tubes — especially the corners of Little Green Footballs, Free Republic, Canada Free Press, etc. — with sheer activist goodness. This may not require Paul Krugman, but it does require some coordination.

Excellent. Demographics are our friends, they can help us find our chosen people in places like Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Virginia, Michigan, and of course sunny Florida. If some rat fuck were to get the e-mail addresses of communities of various demographics they can inform many voters in a variety of very specific districts. This was what made Karl Roves’ exburbs database so useful for the GOP in say, Ohio and Florida.
September 11, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Where in your link you see that McCain wants to “cut off all aid to Israel”? Who said the “cutting $65 billion in earmarks” includes the US aid to Israel? US economic assistance to Israel is highly important FIRST to the US to protect its vast military and military-skirt industry and for keeping the highly influence of the US on the ME affairs for its own interest. The pure Israeli interest would have been to release hers commitment to the US and keep close and free connections with the US, Europe, Russia, China, Japan and India. It would have been better for Israel to sell in proper accounts its new technological, scientific, military projects out brakes to the US and give them for free. Remember that Israel pays back its loans to the US.
September 12, 2008 at 4:44 am
My money is on AIPAC giving their full unqualified endorsement to the McCain / Palin ticket. After all, if you were in AIPAC’s shoes, who would you prefer? The long-time anti-semite who’s come over to your side in the hope of short-term political gain, or the person who’s always shared your policies, out of principle? If changing circumstances mean that your policies need to change, you can rely on the opportunist to adapt their public statements accordingly. The principled person is not so trustworthy.
September 12, 2008 at 5:34 am
This is bullshit.
McCain was opposing earmarks as a purely political stunt. He knew it was all talk. Just a part of his plan to set up a presidential run.
To pretend now that he might not support Israel’s militant Zionism is just disingenuous.
Get real.

Israel doesn’t deserve the “we cover your back so you can do as you want.” Let’s put religion aside and look at the politics. Israel has destroyed Lebanon for the attacks from a resistance protecting their lands, and then displace palestinians. I am a christian at heart and cannot agree with anyone that states that because Israel is the land given to the Jews by God, that it must be protected. God has vanquished the evilness of Jews many times over by taking Israel from them. Jesus chastised the pharisee’s and sadduccees because they were misrepresenting the “Law”. Israel does not deserve any protection when it acts in such evil and disgraceful ways.
