Be careful what you wish for, maybe? Elder journalist Sydney H. Schanberg, this time in the Nation, apparently backing up part of crazy Bob Dornan’s crazy talk. Sample:
It’s not clear whether the taped confession McCain gave to his captors to avoid further torture has played a role in his post-war behavior in the Senate. That confession was played endlessly over the prison loudspeaker system at Hoa Lo—to try to break down other prisoners—and was broadcast over Hanoi’s state radio. Reportedly, he confessed to being a war criminal who had bombed civilian targets. The Pentagon has a copy of the confession but will not release it. Also, no outsider I know of has ever seen a non-redacted copy of the debriefing of McCain when he returned from captivity, which is classified but could be made public by McCain.
So, in all seriousness, I’m not going to fault anyone for anything they did in a fucking Vietnamese POW camp. I generally make a few anti-American commie propaganda tapes before I go out for phở, just to be on the safe side. I’m what they call in military jargon “a big fucking coward”, and consider myself a living example of why conscription is a bad idea.
Also, Bob Dornan, Ted Sampley, Ross Perot etc. – these are crazy, crazy people, sad drifters in the psychic badlands of Outer Wingnuttistan. I have not looked into the whole POW/MIA issue, because I have limited free time and have found that fitting my shoes into Congressman Dornan’s unfortunate footsteps is a poor use of it, and will tend to make me feel like Major Tom floating away from all that is solid and sane. I can empathize with the families who pursued this issue in the 70′s, 80′s, and beyond, who were tormented by loss and a dreadful uncertainty, and I can understand how they would want there to be some way to hold out hope for their loved ones’ return – but that doesn’t make them, you know, factually correct.
And, finally, while The Nation is in many ways a wonderful publication, they often appear willing to publish literally any bullshit by writers who can produce their authentic 1968 SDS Inner Circle commemorative roachclip, so the fact that it appears in those pages does not necessarily make it any less crazy. The queasiness you are experiencing may not be evidence that you have been wrenched into a parallel perpendicular universe where up is down and black is white and Ross Perot is occassionally something other than Verne Troyer with a Scrooge McDuck money and a pulsating brain tumor made out of psilocybin crystals. You might just be lactose intolerant.
Anyway, this itself isn’t a proper ratfuck, as no one who reads the Nation was going to vote for McCain anyway. However, it might lend some legitimacy to cynical outflanking-from-the-bonkers-right maneuvers, so perhaps a rodentine marital aid of some sort? Now if you will excuse me, I need to get my drank on.

I am utterly appalled by this horrible, horrible attack on Senator McCain. Of course, this sort of filth is once again being peddled by the America-hating left.
There is only one rememdy; we must have Chris Matthews read aloud this article over and over again, so that it might be defeated in a series of serious, level-headed debates amongst our better peers in journalism.
…and surely, this debate will take at least, at least until November for them to resolve.

It’s hard to tell fact from fiction these days.
But this, if true, this would be troubling.

Is this rat fucking?
I’m serious. Does it count?

O’sham – “This woman is from Alaska… She is strong. She is tough. She is competent.”
No. that’s CNN’s Republican talking points but read in a sarcastic voice. Last week was the same script, but within a story about how the sassy, brassy Palin-from-Alaska could be just what America needs.

So you’re going soft on us in this the hour of the ascendance of Emperor Ratigula?
But seriously, I get your point. I’m of several minds. For example, I tend to agree with this as well:
There is only one rememdy; we must have Chris Matthews read aloud this article over and over again, so that it might be defeated in a series of serious, level-headed debates amongst our better peers in journalism.
…and surely, this debate will take at least, at least until November for them to resolve.
So allow me, in my non-professional capacity, to join The Editors in condemning this story and its protagonists. But, as a
mediocre bloggerfailed dungeon masterjournalist, it my ethical responsibility to insist that we keep discussing this newsworthy story, carefully considering all sides so as to remain impartial.September 24, 2008 at 9:09 am
Revisiting McCain’s actions as a tortured POW is not ratfucking. True ratfucking would consist of printing up Spanish-language flyers telling readers that their immigrant relatives will be rounded up and deported if they attempt to vote in this election. Attributed to “Minutemen for McCain”, or something similar. THAT would be a true rodent gang bang.
September 24, 2008 at 9:34 am
if this was a right-wing blog, you’d be off to the races without a thought for the credibility of the source. Just sayin’.
These McCain-betrayed-POWs nutcases have been around for quite a while, every time McCain runs a campaign they pop up. It’s not like nobody has looked into their claims before. While I don’t think it’s beyond the pale to look into it, I think that’s been done already. Pity that Schanberg has fallen for it/them.
What’s really f’d up is that while we have the decency not to trash a POW’s record with lies and any old unfounded or semifounded rumor we can come up with, the GOP (as we all know) did this shamelessly to Kerry in 2004, and was rewarded for it. WTMFH?
For that matter they did it to Bill Clinton too, there wasn’t any loony conspiracy theory too extreme to push, endlessly repeat or make money off of.
I don’t know who’s worse… the people who make a career out of this kind of character assassination, or the people who fall for it.

All this meta-ratfucking. Liberals are such pussies all we can do is talk about what ratfucking would be if one would actually ratfuck.
The problem is, and its one that is plainly difficult to overcome, that for all the bluster and ‘tactical advice’ we give to Obama about going nuclear on the old man’s ass, we’re wedded to the notion of rationality, fair play and truthfulness. Some of us are cool with it being served up hard, but it still has to be righteous.
Shite, even if we summoned up the stones to flat-out lie and bullshit and got caught our first reponse wouldn’t be, ala wingnuttia, to start doubling down on the lie. It would be to mumble some horseshit about the ‘essence of truth’ and backtrack on it.
So, if we’re to write the great screenplay McCain: From Ho to Bitch, we have to simply do it. Like Sean Connory’s character in the The Untouchables lecturing the whiny Ness about following the law: Then what are ye preparred ta du?
Take that advice or go back to our regularly scheduled reality-based griping.
There really shouldn’t be shame attached to a man who is unwilling to fuck rats. But if the gauntlet has been thrown down, who among us is going to pick it up with our ass cheeks?

Who are you speaking to?
September 24, 2008 at 10:57 am
Here’s what I’m thinking: In order to beat the Great Ratigula, you first have to think like the Great Ratigula.
Now, for a moment, put yourself in the shoes of a wingnut. You keep hearing those filthy librulz talk about McCain’s defection to Vietnam (or what have you). Ask yourself: What Will The Great Patriotic Republican Do?
And the answer is clear. You, as a patriotic Republican, will confidently say that even if McCain did defect, it was all because he had no other choice and therefore he could be excused. Indeed, being captured in a foreign land where they don’t speak English is enough suffering for him, and it’s the greatest sacrifice a soldier can make, is it not?
Also, talking about McCain’s actions in Vietnam is an ad hominem, which is a sort of Biblical sin.

Which brings me to… this:
Therefore, perhaps talking about McCain’s war records isn’t such a good idea after all, unless we have a plan on what to do next.

I may have ratfucked without knowing it. Small pricked motherfuckers.
But seriously, if you are serious about what you wrote The Eds. — and not doing a semi-jacknife upside down rip — the meta-discussion-of-ratfucking-as-ratfucking is a nice ploy, but doesn’t hit the full-on mark of, say, a forged letter written in scribbly, broken-shoulder scrawl pledging allegiance to Ho Chi Minh if only the beating will stop.
Ask yourself this quesiton WWBND? If you think Bizarro Nixon would quote The Nation to insinuate McCain’s Manchurian bonnies or would he simply post a YouTube video that shows a grainy film of a Viet Cong irregular holding a note (as if anyone would understand Vietnamese enough to read it) with the subtitle: McCain Accepts War Criminality or some such thing.
Moreover, at the risk of being further ratfucked, I was mostly referring to myself. I am to wedded to the notion of basic honesty to really fuck around on McCain. The reality is so stark — he’s a dottering moron flanked by assholes — that devastating pranks are practically the only thing that he could successfully run against at this point.

Military-record Ratfucking doesn’t work for Dems, because they have been successfully portrayed as weak and unmilitary by Republicans for going on a couple generations now. That’s why Repub chickenhawks could attack John Kerry, and why if Obama or any other Dem surrogate ever went after McCain’s military service it would backfire in a truly calamitous way. Recall Wesley Clark’s eminently reasonable proposition that being a POW didn’t necessarily qualify one to be President. That wasn’t ratfucking, hell, it wasn’t even untrue, but I think you remember the reaction.
Leave the veteran smearing to the Repubs. The Dems don’t need it to win.
September 24, 2008 at 4:28 pm
That’s so true. Planning a football game isn’t playing a football game, and yet football players do a fair bit of it. Actually, most people who do things take some time to think about these things. Indeed, sometimes people who wish to encourage other people to do what they do take time to discuss publicly what they are doing. And sometimes people get sick of doing hateful chores and take a few minutes to whine about them. Only now do I understand the depths of their cowardice and hypocrisy.
September 24, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Here I am trying to compliment you Eds. — by saying, jokingly, that we liberals are too “pussy” to lie, cheat, and demean themselves to win the election because, ultimately, most of us have scruples…
Oh well. I plainly didn’t get the post.
September 24, 2008 at 5:12 pm
McCain admits he broke under torture. He made a tape if not a series of tapes for the North Vietnamese to use for their own propaganda purposes. I’d like to know the full story.
If you want to call that ratfucking, go right fucking ahead.
September 24, 2008 at 5:18 pm
And, really, I don’t think of you as a real hypocrite or coward whether you are ratfucking or not.
I was riffing off what I mistakeningly thought this post was about. Carry on!

How many other POW’s taped confessions for North Vietnam?
