Richard Hofstadter, 1964:
If, after our historically discontinuous examples of the paranoid style, we now take the long jump to the contemporary right wing, we find some rather important differences from the nineteenth-century movements. The spokesmen of those earlier movements felt that they stood for causes and personal types that were still in possession of their country—that they were fending off threats to a still established way of life. But the modern right wing, as Daniel Bell has put it, feels dispossessed: America has been largely taken away from them and their kind, though they are determined to try to repossess it and to prevent the final destructive act of subversion. The old American virtues have already been eaten away by cosmopolitans and intellectuals; the old competitive capitalism has been gradually undermined by socialistic and communistic schemers; the old national security and independence have been destroyed by treasonous plots, having as their most powerful agents not merely outsiders and foreigners as of old but major statesmen who are at the very centers of American power. Their predecessors had discovered conspiracies; the modern radical right finds conspiracy to be betrayal from on high.
Michelle Malkin, 2008:
Over the weekend, I watched a hilarious, dead-on, and surprisingly honest skit on Saturday Night Live about the craptastic bailout and its Democrat roots. [...]
The video has been pulled. Vanished into thin air. (Go here for full transcript and screenshots.)
Where did it go and why?
I have a theory.
One of the rapacious couples featured in the skit was Herbert and Marion Sandler (portrayed by Darrell Hammond and Casey Wilson). Unlike the other composite figures, the Sandlers are a real-life couple.
Also lampooned: Left-wing billionaire George Soros.
As Todd Thurman at Heritage notes, the Sandlers are left-wing moguls who built “a mortgage company whose major product was subprime mortgages and they sold it to Wachovia for $24.2 billion in 2006. And what do the Sandlers do when they are not peddling subprime garbage? They are busy writing checks to leftist groups like the Center for American Progress, the American Civil Liberties Union, and Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). Yes that ACORN.”
The post-modern radical right, then, feels dispossessed by a conspiracy of: Democrats; liberals; “RINOs“; the enemedia; TV sketch comedy shows; community organizers; and “left-wing moguls”, “coastal latte-sipping elites”, “city-dwelling liberal bien pessant“, “secular urban intellectuals” and so on, which either is Hieratic Wingnuttese for “sinister Jews”, or has superceded it. Also, Barack Obama is a Commie Musselman, Rachael Ray joined Hamas, Margret Cho’s dog is a terrorist, and the economy is humming right along, thankyouverymuch. Betrayed once from below; then from above; and now an incomprehensible lattice of conspiracies impinging from all directions, and within.
Fortunately, WFB, Jr. expelled all the Birchers into the outer darkness 2 years befor Hofstadter noticed them, and it is now the Democrat Party which suffers the most casualties in this area. Fortunately.

It sure is sinister of NBC to disappear that skit from the internet, where presumably dozens and dozens of people will watch it, after … um … broadcasting it over the air, on cable, via satellite where … no one saw it?
I have such a hard time with wingnut “logic.”

It’s like climate change, except different. Or perhaps not different.
Biden is an Elitist, Obama is a Muslimist. And McCain is a maverist. Palin? A hockeyist, probably.

Hitler famously said:
“We would never have risen to power if they had stopped us on SNL.”
I google and see no one has yet had the decency, the sense of civic duty, to photoshop Michelle with a Hitler mustache.
It would be irresponsible not to do this, my friends.

But look on the bright side, the persecution complext has gotten so much better since 1964…right?

I liked that bit about Palin’s support of militia groups or whatever. Here’s some footage you may find interesting.

oh dear god. my smallminded wingnut boss who likes to tell me how terrible obama is told me today about how wachovia bought out some something with subprime something and then GEORGE SOROS. i wondered where he kept getting these ridiculous talking points and now i know! my crazy boss reads michelle malkin during his lunch break!!!!!
October 7, 2008 at 1:24 pm
ps this is the same boss who pretty much lost his shit when they put polar bears on the endangered species list and claimed that this was going to be the end of Industry in America.
oh yea and he makes fun of the “run-down” businesses near a historically black college and claims that it’s a “really dangerous neighborhood.” yea no racists at my place of employment! no sir!
and despite this crap, hopefully our fair state of north carolina will go blue in a month :D

I like how Michelle Malkin conveniently neglects to mention WHERE she originally saw the SNL sketch that’s “disappeared.”
It’s still on Hulu, for free. http://www.hulu.com/watch/38041/saturday-night-live-washington-approves-the-bailout
The entire episode is available on amazon video on demand (minus musical act) for 2 bucks. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HF5VHO/ref=atv_dp_series?ie=UTF8&redirect=true
I’m going to guess Malkin saw it on youtube, and NBC is pretty vigilant about none of their product being on youtube, since hulu (which nbc co-owns) is a direct competitor. And Malkin, being what we call in the business “a lying dishonest jackass,” knows this, but saying that NBC forced the clip to disappear sure sound more conspiracy-y, don’t it?

When you’re making up an insult that no wingnut has ever actually used, I love that little touch where you mis-spell the French part.

Why is the Universe so unfair?
Why do the astoundingly rich & powerful always find themselves so threatened by the poor & weak?

I sure hope you’re using that “Democrat party” phrase ironically.

I would nominate our beloved hairy hero as spokesperson against this vast postmodern conspiracy to limit our freedom to worship only in pro-life pro-war atmospheres, but given the direction of the economy it might be best to ensure that his sock-darning skills are up to snuff.

So Barack calls me up and there’s this pause and he says, “You want to join the team?” Everybody knows he’s gonna win, so I’m naturally thinking, fuckin A, now I got a portfolio in the administration. Chancellor of the Exchequer, that would be a good job. I figured I’ll hold out for that. Like who does he trust more than me, with all the shit we did junior year in madrasa school? But Barack says I can’t have it. Furthermore he says there is no such thing as Chancellor. Since when? Instead, he goes, I should be an anti-apostle. The fuck? But he he tells me that the president thing is bullshit, he only got it after he got picked for AntiChrist, sort of like the Queen gets to be a lot of extra shit too. But I’m all dubious, what do I have to do, is it hard? He says I just have to like pound a goat-headed staff on the ground and chant while this big black guy nails some virgin. Not Barack, Satan. Barack says he’s a good guy. It’s always consensual with the virgins too, there’s never any shortage of recruits, the last meeting it was this chick from Alaska, Brisket or something, who you’d never think would go for Satan meat. So I’m gonna do it, I think. Me and him again, it’d be funny as shit.

Malkin is, of course, completely correct.
Yes, the MSM is part of the liberal Putsch: their editing of McCain’s earlier gaffes was only a feint, as the current relentless attacks on him (& the innocent-until-proven guilty Palin) prove beyond a doubt!
Yes, damn those Iraqis & Afghans for constantly attacking our helpless peace-loving cluster-bombs & DU-tipped machinegun- & cannon-rounds with their vile hideous bodies! The depths of their malevolent conspiracy know no bounds!
The masses truly ARE revolting (especially after slamming back their 3rd or 4th round of Jello-shots)!

’scuse my sexism, but should that be “jacquelineass”?
October 8, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Malkin might be interested in knowing this. Just kidding, learning doesn’t really seem to be her thing. Nonetheless:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/tvguide/382363_tvgif8.html
So Lorne Michaels didn’t know that the skit was saying that a couple of real-live people should be shot, and yanked said sketch when he found out.
Malkin publishes the home addresses of America haters, so her sense of boundaries may be a little different from Lorne’s.

’scuse my sexism, but should that be “jacquelineass”?
It would, if Malkin were female.
Would it be irresponsible to speculate that Michelle “Mike” Malkin shares a “special anatomical characterisdick” with mAnn Coulter? It would be irresponsible NOT to!

It never occurred to me that anyone would use “The Paranoid Style in American Politics” as a list of suggestions.
October 9, 2008 at 5:12 am
It never occurred to me before the last few years that people would use 1984 as a governing instruction guide, or “Idiocracy” as a depiction of desired citizen behaviors & attitudes.

Why do the astoundingly rich & powerful always find themselves so threatened by the poor & weak?
I’m thinking that it comes from numbering only a few thousand while surrounded by hundreds of millions of everyone else? From knowing that their priveleged positions exists only as long as we can be fooled into tolerating them?

Isn’t it nice that Lorne Michaels and his “outlaw” crew of comedic “rebels” has turned into the MSM’s chief conduit for the dissemination of wingnut talking points? Seriously, you could only get this version of the mortgage crisis from the Malkinesque element of the blogosphere, FOX News, or from Saturday Night Live.
I’m not sure if they’ve got wingnut writers on staff, or if they just do their “research” at Little Green Balls. Anyway, more here, if you like: http://policomic.wordpress.com/2008/10/09/snl-news-and-more-republican-whining/
