Telling the CIA to get its facts straight

“House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey of Wisconsin issued a curt letter to CIA Director Leon Panetta, his former House colleague from Monterey, demanding a correction in the CIA timeline of congressional torture briefings that show Pelosi was told “enhanced interrogation techniques had been employed.”

“Pelosi has maintained that she was told only that the Bush administration had found legal grounds to torture but had not yet used it. In fact, the CIA had already waterboarded one terror suspect, Abu Zubaydah, 83 times.

“Crossing out the “Dear Director Panetta” with the more familiar “Leon,” Obey minced no words.

“He said he was “surprised to learn that the agency erroneously listed an Appropriations staffer as being in a key briefing on Sept. 19, 2006, when in fact he was not,” Obey wrote. He said the aide, Paul Juola, was told he could not attend the briefing and asked “that you immediately correct this record.”
