If there were no Tom Waits, it would indeed be tempting to posit that this universe is in fact the circle of hell in which they throw people who sinfully used their reason in a previous life. In fact, this may be the single best explanation for the otherwise unexplainable popularity of Sarah Palin and the Jonas Brothers, but we’re not going there right now. This comment is in appreciation of my brother Tom. I too, would rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.
