Aside from the sorry state of the voting public -comprised of a shocking number of insane and/or astoundingly ignorant and angry pitchfork self-impalers - Rick Perlstein offers one of the reasons why this country is unable to catch up to the rest of the world in terms of public health insurance:
It used to be different. You never heard the late Walter Cronkite taking time on the evening news to “debunk” claims that a proposed mental health clinic in Alaska is actually a dumping ground for right-wing critics of the president’s program, or giving the people who made those claims time to explain themselves on the air. The media didn’t adjudicate the ever-present underbrush of American paranoia as a set of “conservative claims” to weigh, horse-race-style, against liberal claims. Back then, a more confident media unequivocally labeled the civic outrage represented by such discourse as “extremist” — out of bounds.
The tree of crazy is an ever-present aspect of America’s flora. Only now, it’s being watered by misguided he-said-she-said reporting and taking over the forest. Latest word is that the enlightened and mild provision in the draft legislation to help elderly people who want living wills — the one hysterics turned into the “death panel” canard — is losing favor, according to the Wall Street Journal, because of “complaints over the provision.”
Good thing our leaders weren’t so cowardly in 1964, or we would never have passed a civil rights bill — because of complaints over the provisions in it that would enslave whites.
Steve Benen has more on media dysfunctionality, and how it serves to screw over the American people repeatedly and without lubrication.
I did my best to tune in to the Sunday newsies yesterday, but was made physically ill by the discussion of death panels as if there actually was, you know, a provision remotely resembling ”death panels” in any of the bills under consideration. Anywhere.
And as if the actual end of life provisions aren’t entirely innocuous, and previously championed by such death panel demagogues as Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin. The whole point of these provisions (that Palin supported wholeheartedly) is to allow the individual the FREEDOM to decide how to deal with their final days in order to make sure that the GUMINT can’t make decisions for them.
While these facts went unmentioned, there was plenty of discussion of how this whole saga is indicative of Sarah Palin’s political power and, I shit you not, “political savvy.”
What the fucking fuckity fuck in the world does that mean?????
The stupid has reached supernova and all the media can do is applaud the ability of those firing up the stupid to capture the media’s attention with a particularly shiny stupid. Rather than, you know, point out that stupid mendacity is actually stupid and mendacious, and its purveyors likewise (or, in the alternative, cynical and mendacious).
Next up, a spirited debate on the likelihood that ObamaCare will end up looking like this:

well to be honest u should be angrier at politicians than the media. it is the medias job to report news and peoples opinions about this important issue are news even if u dont share those opinions. how would u like it if ur opinions were the ones that were not being reported. oh yeah thats how u feel and thats the point of this rant right. well ur wrong and in fact u have the most famous man in the world on tv every nite selling ur plan and he gets more air time than the protesters. im talking about obama in case u didnt get it lol.
it is the politicians job to make the best decisions even if he thinks it is unpopular which if u look at the post underneath this one u will see a poll that says that it is popular no matter what the media is reporting.
as for the death panels i have some opinions about that but this is already to long lol.

Harris, this is why we have elections to settle policy option election disputes, this is a representative democracy, not a direct democracy. Obama won in States like IN, NC, OH, FL, MO, NV, states Gore and Kerry couldn’t win, his platform was debated for two years. When you let 17-30% of the public, (we really don’t know this is why we have elections), obstruct the intentions of the other 52% you undermine democracy and our constitutional process. It’s like if we didn’t let Bush invade nations illegally, or wire tap you without a FISA warrant after his “election.” You have to respect the votes and you have to give the man more then two fiscal quarters. Is that not reasonable, Harris? You a democracy fan or do you prefer the tyranny of the minority as outlined in Federalist 10 by Jimmy Madison? Read it, and then come back.
PS I love you.

are u agreeing with me or disagreeing with me. b/c i think i agree with u but u maybe didnt get my point which was that the politicians are more to blame than the media for nothing getting done.
August 17, 2009 at 10:58 am
There is a lot of false equivalence w.r.t. ‘the birthers’ and ’9-11 conspiracy theorists’ out there. As if the media ever gave 9-11 as much time or consideration.
But there still are AFAIK a lot of unanswered questions:
1) Was there or was there not an exercise concerning ‘hijacked airline scenarios’ on 9-11? Leading maybe to a reduced response rate of the various agencies?
2) Who placed the put options on United and AA?
3) The actions of various officials that day seem questionable at least. ATC officals, the V.P., the President.
4) Richard Cohen was told by someone in the admin (according to himself – “shortly after 9-11″) to take Cipro. That suggests foreknowledge of the anthrax attacks.
5) Why was the admin. so hesitant to organize a 9-11 commission? Why did they want it chaired by Henry Kissinger?
And got Lee (whitewash) Hamilton.
6) The identification of the hijackers was pretty rapid, yet in many cases flawed. Why?
7) Accounts of the movements of Mohammed Atta are rather implausible and inconsistent.
8) Accounts of when exactly the President was informed of the multiple hijackings are inconsistent. Moreover the chain of command that day appears to have been seriously broken, in that no one gave orders for intercept/downing of hijacked planes for literally at least 45 up to 1 hr 15 minutes.
9) No one seems to have connected any dots with the Egyptian pilot who took a plane down by himself into the ATlantic the previous March (or April) — that should have been a warning and possibly had some connection to Al-qaeda terrorism planning.
August 17, 2009 at 11:40 am
Well we get a lot of false equivalence- the payoffs are important in terms of message. If someone feels it’s in their interest that millions of fellow citizens continue to receive sub-par health care at ruinous cost, and you know you can’t win other than by stirring the pot and bringing up the intellectual dregs of society (I’m looking at you, Sarah Palin), or by painting swastikas or Hitler mustaches on pictures, it would then be in your interest to have some cover. If you are one of the intellectual or ethical dregs of society (I’m looking at you, Dick Armey) the false equivalence is your best tactic.
Consider the use of Nazi imagery by anti-war protesters circa 2003 vs that of anti-health care protesters in 2009. Which is more nazi-like, to start a war under false pretenses using lies and fear, condoning the use of torture in violation of international law, using indiscriminate surveillance technology in violation of your nations laws on citizens inside its borders? Or giving an elderly patient the chance to talk to a medical professional before filing a living will?
One of these things is not like the others.
August 17, 2009 at 12:59 pm
And then there’s this one: Conservative kooks carrying Obama = Hitler signs is just like that one Bush = Hitler ad that MoveOn didn’t make and didn’t run … and Dick Army watched just yesterday morning.

For the love of God, please don’t change the subject from we need to talk smartly about health insurance reform, to 9/11 was an inside job. Please? It was incompetence. It wasn’t the Mossad, it wasn’t Lyndon LaRouche and the Queen, we missed it because of incompetence, and lack of intel sharing.
August 19, 2009 at 6:10 am
You seem to have missed point 4)
cf archives of salon.com search:
“Glenn Greenwald” + “anthrax” for definitive timeline.
Moreover the way in which the Saudi- Bin Ladens were hustled out of country before commercial airlines were up and operational suggests a good deal of competence and organization.
A lot of people knew something was up (those ‘put’ calls, remember), and it seems deliberately slow walked every countermeasure, including the task force once headed by Clarke.
My point was the false equivalence of legitimate liberal concerns with right wing trolls. Which, it seems, you want to continue, now employing it against me.
And if you’re playing a thread-hijack cop, well I gotta say: ‘Fuck the Pigs!’
August 17, 2009 at 12:44 pm
hey sorry dude i have nothing better to do lol. besides i thought the point of haveing a political blog with comments was to maybe have a debate so here i am. i didnt mean to offend u. in fact ur the one who called me indirectly stupid in the blog post so i should be mad at u but its cool. u should calm ur retoric down a bit and the other side should too. that nazi and hitler stuff is over the top. its not as bad to call us stupid but it doesnt help right.
but like i said before obama is the most famous man alive and so to get any attention conservatives have to get extreme. its the same as the war protesters when bush was popular. i know that was a long time ago lol. i think they are too extreme tho and obama is doing the right thing by staying cool. u have to admit he looks better then the protesters who look crazy. they may be doing u a favor if u think about it.
August 17, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Harris, here’s the thing. Let’s imagine a world in which Sarah Palin held a press conference to announce that Presdient Obama is a space alien.
99% of the coverage would revolve around the following topics:
* Palin Declares Obama is a Space Alien
* How do Palin Allegations Affect Obama’s Popularity?
* Republicans Distance Themselves from Aliens, Space or Otherwise
* Are the Democrats the Party of Space Aliens?
* Romney Proposes ‘War on UFOs’
* Obama Denies Allegations that He Is a Space Alien
* Lumbering Under Extra-Terrestrial Accusations, Democrats Prepare for 2010
Lost in the flurry of opinion polls and he-said, she-said reporting is any clear, unambiguous declaration from the media that BARACK OBAMA IS NOT A @$#$% SPACE ALIEN. It’s like anyone with a big enough microphone gets to become part of the “national discussion”, even if their statements are easily debunked contradictions of fact.
August 17, 2009 at 6:25 pm
Exactly.
August 17, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Actually, I can see Obama refusing to comment on allegations that he is a space alien, therefore being responsible for stirring up the mob because he hasn’t presented himself for anatomical inspection for each nut with an internet connection.

My Americans, fellows: Hiya
I’m standing here on this beautiful windswept mountain top just awe inspired by the world that god made.
A world made for humans. A world for humanity.
But where is the humanity in the Democratic party I ask ya.
It ain’t in Barack Obama that’s for sure, excuse me.
Now I don’t mean to say he isn’t a human per se, what I am getting at is I hold here in my hand a list of Democratic Presidents that have been Aliens, infiltrating the U.S for nefarious purposes from outside, and on that list is a name, and that name is Barack Obama, which leads to one conclusion.
Gosh, look at that view would ya. It makes my heart pound and flutter to think about how the beauty of the world is sometimes that god gave us – the humans.
But what I would like to think about with you, for us to think, is – why is a alien from outside the earth even, here and making us go past death panels to exert our god given right to exist.
Is it because he doesn’t like what god gave us, doesn’t like for us to have rights like life, and liberty, and dominion over the earth. I’m just sayin, cause that’s what it looks like to me sitting here in god’s good creation, and let me tell ya, you can see a long ways pretty clear from here, all the way to Washington in fact, and the evil that lurks there.
Thanks all.

August 17, 2009 at 1:10 pm
But your point didn’t make any sense because it is not the media’s job to report opinion as fact.
If someone’s opinion is that the legislation called for death panels, then it is the media’s job to report that the person is either: (a) lying; or (b) extremely ignorant.
And, no, Obama isn’t making the case every night, and it doesn’t matter how famous he is. Famous presidents aren’t able to triumph over mass ignorance, a feckless media and an extremely well-financed opposition willing to resort to base propaganda, fear tactics and outright lies.
August 17, 2009 at 1:46 pm
im glad were friends again :)
the media is not reporting opinions as fact it is reporting about the protests. protests are news just like they were for the war protests.
as for the other things u mentioned ur right that obama cant do it alone but u have to wonder why all those ppl are lined up against him. and where is his organization that should be out there getting his message out. he has a lot of advantages that maybe hes just not using for some reason but he should be. for someone like him getting ur message out shouldnt be a problem.

Harris, can you tell me what the difference between invading Iraq and insuring 40 million uninsured Americans, providing inter-job portability, and getting rid of pre-existing conditions, is?
August 17, 2009 at 1:08 pm
i decided to write about the death panels after all. lucky u lol. but basically the death panels are real just not what sarah palin says it is. but its like what we have now with insurance that doesnt pay for every treatment and that same thing will continue with govt health care b/c it has to or it will go broke. its like that in other countries right now like in england they dont pay for some cancer treatments.
lung cancer treatments cost like 50000 dollars and extend ur life maybe two months. even if it was me with the cancer i would say thats not worth it. every business and organization and even person makes this kind of decision when u decide if something is worth the cost. theres a name for it in business but i dont remember it lol.
basicaly thats what will happen and it is in fact a death panel b/c they will decide if it is worth it to treat u. im not saying this is a bad thing in fact i think its a smart thing. but if u say theres no such thing as death panels thats just not true.
August 17, 2009 at 1:14 pm
No, you are wrong.
The so-called death panels refers to a provision that allows people to consult with their doctors and lawyers to draft living wills that govern end of life treatment.
That’s it. It was recently taken out of the bill to appease the Sarah Palins of the world. So it’s not in there anymore.
To the extent that any insurance provider will decide that certain treatments will not be covered, that is not a death panel. That is an insurance provider making judgments on treatments.
But they don’t decide whether or not to TREAT you. They decide whether or not they will PAY for the doctors to treat you. You can always pay for it yourself. You can always get the treatment. No one will stop you.
So, again, no.
But other than the fact that there are no death panels, great comment.
August 17, 2009 at 4:27 pm
lung cancer treatments cost like 50000 dollars and extend ur life maybe two months. even if it was me with the cancer i would say thats not worth it.
Ah.
And how would you ensure that your wishes are observed, my miniscule-lettered one? The miracle of odern medicine is that it can keep you going and going and going, just like the little pink bunny in the television, and it will, unless you tell your provider when to stop.
But, oh yeah. How are you going to let them know? You’ve got the cancer right, and what with the big fat breathing tube stuck down your throat and all the bags of fluid draining into you with all the drugs keeping you going making coherent conversation chancey at best while the money drains completely out of your estate, how are you going to let them know you’ve had enough? Because they will keep your body hooked up, you know, keep it going until well after all the money you wish you had is gone. They’re medical. That’s what they do.
Suppose you sat down with somebody who said, “Oh, just write down what you want done. Sign the thing and it’s settled. Your wishes observed, down to the littlest letter, little-letter person.”
Out here in the land of capital letters it’s called an advance health care directive: somebody decides whether or not to pull the plug, and that person is you. You write it down and have it notarized: you call the shots.
Oh, and fuck you and your death panel bullshit.

Wow. I stopped reading Somerby a couple of years ago.
And that’s the problem, because Somerby’s right.
August 18, 2009 at 2:17 am
Why do so many left-leaning types spit in disgust whenever Bob Somerby is mentioned?
I don’t always agree with his tone or priorities, but he’s the only blogger that has actually made me re-think my position sometimes.
August 18, 2009 at 5:29 am
To drew42:
It’s because Somerby actually criticizes other people on the left end of the political spectrum when they say or do something stupid, rather than mindlessly praising them.
August 18, 2009 at 6:14 am
I stopped reading him (after doing so for maybe three years) because it was no longer necessary: I got the message! Now he just seems bitter and pissed off at everybody on the left because why doesn’t anybody listen to meeee!
August 18, 2009 at 7:04 am
Well, people ought to listen to Bob Somerby. Liberals in the mainstream press (and those who are outside it, but aspire to join) still refuse to critize the nonsense that is our political conversation. Almost 10 years on now, and we still read nonsense about how Al Gore invented the internet/discovered love canal, how HRC hypocritically claimed both to be a Cubs and a Yankees fan and the ten blow jobs Monica Lewinsky gave Bill Clinton! Mainstream politic pundits can still get away with calling Hillary Clinton a “bitch,” and then not bother to apologize! Where was/is liberal darling Josh Marshall on this? Oh yeah, wasting time on stupid sex scandals. All these distractions are a big reason why the health care plan, if it is ever passed and I doubt it will, won’t do anything.
August 17, 2009 at 5:41 pm
this important issue
There’s no “issue,” for Chrissake. “Death panels” are LIES — not just distortion and disinformation and propaganda, but out-and-out lies from people who don’t give a shit about anything except how much money they can squeeze out of you. You want to discuss the real issues? Stop mouthing the lies.
August 17, 2009 at 6:45 pm
I propose the following experiment. Give some particularly shiny stupid to an angry pitchfork self-impaler. Let them play with it, nurture it, grow it, come to love the shiny stupid as a member of their own family. Then dress your brainy uncle Leonard in a hoity toity suit and in front of a large audience, tell Mr/Mrs fucking fuckity fuck that their shiny stupid is indeed, nothing more than a simple shiny stupid. Ahahahahahahaha… the audience cries, with much gleeful backslapping and clapping and some wetting of the pants.
So now I ask you, what percentage of the angry pitchfork self-impalers would prefer to go home with that shiny stupid and not your uncle Leonard? Excellent. My point is proven. Your uncle Leonard must become shinier and stupider, like our new friend harris.
August 18, 2009 at 6:11 am
I think it’s worth pointing out, of course, that dear old Uncle Walter didn’t report on other “extremist” ideas either: accusations that the US was subverting democracy in latin America to benefit US corporations, for instance.
Obviously you shouldn’t give nutjobs media attention, but let’s remember who owns the news.

Re: Sun Ra:
Draft and wartime experiences
In October 1942 Blount received a selective service notification that he had been drafted into the Military of the United States. He quickly declared himself a conscientious objector, citing religious objections to war and killing, his financial support of his great-aunt Ida, and his chronic hernia. His case was rejected by the local draft board, and in his appeal to the national draft board, Blount wrote that the lack of black men on the draft appeal board “smacks of Hitlerism”.[12] His family was deeply embarrassed by Sonny’s refusal to join the military, and he was effectively ostracized by many of his relatives. Blount was eventually approved for alternate service at Civilian Public Service camp in Pennsylvania. However, Blount didn’t appear at the camp as scheduled on December 8, 1942, and shortly thereafter, he was arrested in Alabama.
In court, Blount declared that even alternate service was unacceptable to him, and he debated the judge on points of law and Biblical interpretation. Though sympathetic to Blount, the judge also declared that he was clearly in violation of the law, and was risking forcible induction into the U.S. Military. Blount declared that if he were inducted, he would use his military weapons and training to kill the first high-ranking military officer he could. The judge sentenced Blount to jail (pending draft board and CPS rulings), and then declared “I’ve never seen a nigger like you before;” Blount replied, “No, and you never will again.”[13]

The media doesn’t note that six Senators representing the smallest states, WY,ND,MT, and IA have taken over all the legislative power when it comes to Healthcare because of their positions on the Finance Committee. These Senators represent a tiny minority of people, and their actions are not in the interests of the most people. So if we want to talk about how we talk about the problem, let’s talk about the fact that a 100 member body has been hijacked by a tiny minority who get their campaign money from insurance companies.
Democrats – Majority (13)
*Max Baucus, Chairman, Montana
Jay Rockefeller, West Virginia
*Kent Conrad, North Dakota
*Jeff Bingaman, New Mexico
John Kerry, Massachusetts
*Blanche Lincoln, Arkansas
Ron Wyden, Oregon
Charles Schumer, New York
Debbie Stabenow, Michigan
Maria Cantwell, Washington
*Bill Nelson, Florida
Robert Menendez, New Jersey
Thomas Carper, Delaware
GOP -Minority (10)
*Chuck Grassley, Ranking Member, Iowa
*Orrin Hatch, Utah
*Olympia Snowe, Maine
Jon Kyl, Arizona
Jim Bunning, Kentucky
Mike Crapo, Idaho
Pat Roberts, Kansas
John Ensign, Nevada
*Mike Enzi, Wyoming
John Cornyn, Texas
Focus your attention on Baucus, Conrad, Enzi, Nelson, Lincoln, Bingaman, Hatch and Snowe. Write letters, hand written letters have more effect then e-mails,and let them know, you know what’s really going on.
August 19, 2009 at 1:57 am
Also, Kerry and J Rock need to check Baucus and Conrad. B and C’s small state insurance monied interested parties are holding back big states with more people, and yes I know all four take corporate dollars, but Kerry and J Rock have the seniority media access to stop bitching and moaning about B and C and start getting busy. I don’t care how they do it, but not having a Health Care Reform w/ a real public option the Dems will turn off their base, and that combined with the GOP who will hate on Obama no matter what, no matter what concession, will leave Obama’s numbers in the 40s, and that will kill his agenda. Like Bill Clinton said, bite the bullet, pass a quality bill, and wait to reap the benefits a year or 2 from now. I’m willing to risk a Senate seat from North Dakota. In some ways this recess is a show, in that train is already on a certain set of rails, and we know that we have 52% of the electorate, 218 in the House, and 61 in the Senate but deals get broken, and Conrad and Baucus have way too much power, and it’s not helping the Party. Where is our leverage on C and B, they can threaten to switch parties, but I don’t know how these 2 can be whipped, as the Senators holding up the PO rep literally the four smallest pop. states.
August 19, 2009 at 8:05 am
i think about health insurance alot b/c i live in massachusetts and we are forced to buy it. the amount that companies and ppl pay to the insurance companies adds up to like ten thousand or more for every family every year. and then add to that the amount of our taxes that goes to public insurance but i dont know much about that so i wont talk about it right now. but anyway its alot of money.
now u may ask what are u getting for that money. basically we are throwing it away b/c i don’t know anyone who uses ten thousand dollars of med care every year. i know there are some ppl who do if they have a bad accident or something and maybe they need life time care or whatever. but overall insurance is a scam.
so what im saying is what if instead of insuring everybody we didnt insure anybody. if there was no health insurance then everybody would have ten thousand more dollars to spend on whatever or save it to pay for med bills if they have a accident. and the best thing about that plan is that med bills would be way cheaper b/c the insurance companies wouldnt be around to inflate the prices like they have over the last many years.
u know the only reason med care is so expensive is b/c the doctors and hospitals know that the insurance will pay for most of that. if we take them out of the picture then the prices would fall. think about it. then everybody would be able to afford it if u need it and if u dont then u get to keep a bunch of money. win win.
i think this is a great idea and im surprised the politicians havent thought of it but then again when was the last time a politician had a creative solution to a problem lol. the system we have is corrupt but it is very good to politicians who obviously want to keep things the way they are and only make tiny changes not the major changes we need. so of course their plan to deal with the problem of health insurance is to add more health insurance. its crazy and it will just make our bad system go on and on that much longer.
sorry i wrote so much and i hope it was worth ur time if u read it.
August 19, 2009 at 8:22 am
i don’t know anyone who uses ten thousand dollars of med care every year.*
Then you have led an extremely fortunate, blessed and charmed life and you should give thanks and praises, and happily part with your tax/insurance money since you have been so lucky in life. Also, you don’t know many old people do you?
*(Aside from the fact that you kind of conflated terms: first you said that taxes and insurance premiums add up to “like” $10,000 a year for every family, and then mused that you didn’t know any single person that has spend that much in a year. But that amount covers an entire FAMILY, not an individual. Besides, the wealthier pay more, so not every family is paying that amount. And regardless, you have to show your math in getting to the $10,000 number. Merely plucking it out of thin air isn’t good enough.)
August 19, 2009 at 9:01 am
the real number doesnt matter only the fact that everyone who buys insurance pays a ton for it. all ive heard in the last months is how in the us we pay more for health care than anyone else in the world. so wether its 10000 or 10000000 doesnt matter its alot. and it is different for everybody but it is still alot for everybody. i just said 10000 as an example.
for ur second point i meant nobody gets 10000 worth of med care as in value. of course we spend it but that doesnt mean its worth it. like if i had a cold and i went to my pcp he would see me for maybe five minutes. for that he will charge me 15 and blue cross 140. guess what blue cross will pass that cost to me somehow. u cant tell me that my doc spending five minutes with me is worth 155. thats stupid and the only reason he can get away with it is b/c blue cross will pay it and why not they just get it back from me somehow. if not for insurance he would get my 15 bucks and that would be fair.
August 19, 2009 at 10:12 am
Yes, insurance companies are useless middlemen that skim off the top and probably inflate costs.
That’s why the best solution is single payer insurance operated by the government. It’s cheaper to administer than the private stuff, and would help keep costs down because the government could at least use its leverage to negotiate drug prices and it would massively streamline the paperwork process which is a labyrinth due to the number of insurers in the game.
But we also have to address the method of payment per procedure which leads doctors and hospitals to ring up the cash register by overprescribing everything.

We could apply the same idea to car insurance too. If no one had car insurance, then people would drive so carefully and safely that there wouldn’t be any accidents! And even if somebody had an accident, it would be real cheap to get your car fixed. I rest my case.
August 19, 2009 at 9:18 am
i know ur being sarcastic but u never know this might actually work if we tried it lol. obviously ppl will still have accidents but it might be cheaper to fix cars. i know for sure that it would be cheaper to buy a new car if gm and ford and the others didnt have have to pay health insurance for thier workers. thats what bankrupted them after all. and also u could buy that car with the money u saved from not buying health insurance right.

However I think there is a kernal of truth in there: health care sucks because there is ALREADY TOO MUCH MONEY in the system: attracting the machers and the raffkes. If there were no private health insurance companies, things would be a lot cheaper.
August 19, 2009 at 9:12 am
True that.
August 19, 2009 at 9:24 am
exactly. quick question tho what are the machers and the raffkes. google doesnt know either.
August 19, 2009 at 10:05 am
a macher is Yiddish/German slang for a ‘maker’, i.e. someone on the make, trying to milk the system for bux. A ‘raffke’ is much the same thing, but with more of a ‘criminal/scoundrel’ connotation. I believe it is short for ‘Raffinierte Kerl’== ‘refined scoundrel’, or ‘clever shyster’.

I like that harris thinks a lot about Health Insurance, maybe people in all 50 states would then think a lot about health insurance. I think a lot about breaking my eyeballs with a long skinny needle.

My, hasn’t this thread benignly metastized into something that takes the best of internet incivility and transcends it into something sublimely silly?
Well done, ye poor menz, well done.
August 19, 2009 at 9:59 am
I’ll take the small stack of raffkes with a side of machers and smother the whole mess with some low-fat messhugane, sweetie!
August 19, 2009 at 10:08 am
“Meshuginah”,
“low fat mezuzah” would sound funnier. Just saying.
August 19, 2009 at 10:08 am
Now I want pancakes like a crackhead wants crack.
August 19, 2009 at 11:39 am
Pass me the powdered meshuginah, would you? Yum… French toast.
August 19, 2009 at 11:42 am
It saddens me, in a way, that harris is revealed to be merely human and not an ingenious trollbot. I’d envisioned him w/mini-missile racks in his propeller hat.
August 19, 2009 at 12:27 pm
i tried to tell u all that im not a troll. in fact in a way im like ur best friend b/c im the one whose going to tell u what u need to hear not always what u want to hear. i could just agree with everything but then u wouldnt be any better off and i would have missed my teachable moment lol. its my obama impersonation.
its a big repsonsibility to be the best friend for a whole blog but trust me i am up for it lol.

It’s The Lying, Stupid!
August 19, 2009 at 5:45 pm
You people should be ashamed. You’ve ruined harris; now he claims to take himself seriously.
August 19, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Yeah, it’s like forcing someone to explain their joke.
August 19, 2009 at 8:31 pm
We’re pending a death panel review from the water board.

August 19, 2009 at 6:06 pm
Somebody help me out here. Does anyone remember the name of the greatest PMI troll of all time? From maybe ’05 or ’06? It’s on the tip of my tongue…

We’ve spoken much about the dim wits of the polis. And how expanding media tech provides ever new ways of rousing the same old rabble. As if yellow journalism were somehow in decline.
Here’s how to succeed in politics: be able to say ‘mah fellow Americans’ sounding as if you really think they’re you’re fellows and Americans. They aren’t: they’re just the jerks down the street.
Jerks down the street: why there are politics.
August 21, 2009 at 3:44 pm
What? No Lesson #2? Nothing along the lines of:
Lesson #2. Be able to say “them’s no good” in such a way as to make the jerks down the street stop and think “Yeah, thems really is no good!” and “So therefore, without thems, there will be more good.” and “But without Mr./Sarah ‘Mah fellow americans’, we wouldn’t know who thems was.”

As always, freaking BRILLIANT (a la those funny Guinness commercials[sp])…
