Here is a fact: Barack Obama has no trouble generating enthusiasm among black working class voters. That’s not because they are black. He would have had little trouble winning support among white working class voters if they had been able to identify with him because he was white. He has no trouble with working class voters because he appears to them as coming from the same world, the same realm of experience, the same class, if you like. And that’s because he does.
No, I fooled you. For reals this time:
Here is a fact: Barack Obama has trouble generating enthusiasm among white working class voters. That’s not because they are white. He would have had trouble winning support among black working class voters if they had been unable to identify with him because he was black. He has trouble with working class voters because he appears to them as coming from a different world, a different realm of experience, a different class, if you like. And that’s because he does.
See what I did there? (If I managed to reverse all my polarities correctly?)
Judis is advancing the same assessment that we heard during the primaries: that the white proles just don’t cotton to Obama. The “white” here is considered semi-superfluous – defensible, as I’d guess 60-70% of the working class is white, if you are doing badly with the white ones you probably aren’t doing real well overall. Essential, however, is noting that this is most certainly not a race problem – except, of course, in the case of black people.
Now, ignoring the quoted paragraph, I don’t think Judis’ overall thesis is all wrong – voters vote based substantially on identity, and I’m sure identity for working class whites is not just race, or any one thing. It isn’t just one thing for anybody. Hell, for all I know, Judis entirely right in every particular – maybe whites don’t think about race, while blacks are defined by it. I can think of many reasons to doubt him – you don’t see a lot of Hillary Clinton types spitting dip juice into their empty cans of Miller at NASCAR rallies, either, and she had no problem with working class whites; black people have been voting overwhelmingly for white Democrats for half a century; etc. – but I have been really busy and so haven’t had time to peer into the hearts of statistically significant sample of voters and divine their true motives. Perhaps Judis has had time to conduct such a soul survey. If he has, he should make his data available, or at least mention that he has done so. If not, it would be nice if he could at least gesture in the direction of a supporting argument, rather than just assuming everybody automatically buys the “only black people define themselves by race” line so popular on the right these days.

Off topic: Please give us a preview feature so that I don’t continually make myself look like an idiot. Thanks.

You think a preview feature’s gonna do that?
(sorry, it was kind of a hanging curve)

What is it with these people? I’m working class and work among working class. The only white coworkers who dislike Obama are the ones who tend to be racist/homophobic/xenophobic. In other words, the ones who voted for Sarah Starbursts. And they’re unreachable, not because Obama is an elitist, but because they’re morans. You knew that.
But Judis is right. Obama should do something to show he’s po’ folk, jes’ like us. Maybe take up the jug. (keep your eyes on the guy in the top hat)

“…but I have been really busy and so haven’t had time to peer into the hearts of statistically significant sample of voters and divine their true motives.”
This is at least an unwitting contradiction or an outright lie. If you were *really* busy you would be cobbling with princely aplomb another KK instead of man-nursing your burbling offspring, and nothing peers into the hearts of statistically significant sample(s) of voters and divine(s) their true motives as well as a KK spectacularooza.
So I deduce you’re either fucking off or preparing wonders for us all.
How can you not?

May I just say: “I’m glad you’re back, Editors” ?
As for the “I can’t believe I went to MIT but I don’t feel smart” trip: get over it quick.
The world is so full of stupid that you are still a rocket scientist….
Seriously, you got the degree, you did your time, you drank from the firehose. Live long and PROPSer.

For the record: I went to state college. Not one of the better ones, either. This probably should have been my first clue.

It don’t matter !
I still stand by the “The world is so full of stupid that you are still a rocket scientist…” part.

Judis is obviously right that Obama’s life experience is not similar to that of working class Americans. For example, he lived in a house without a flush toilette for a while in Indonesia.
Judis has odd thoughts about race. He also has odd thoughts about class. It doesn’t appear to have much to do with what your father did (divorce your mother when you were two in Obama case and President the USA in Bush’s case).
Not to be condescending or anything, but I think that Judis is saying that the average Joe can’t relate to Obama, because Obama knows a whole hell of a lot more about all sorts of things than the average Joe.
Bush was a regular guy in spite of his class background, because he was as ignorant about public policy as were people whose job was not to execute public policy.
Obama is upper middle class in spite of his very disadvantaged class background, because he knows a huge amount about public policy.
Judis is completely ignoring the dictionary definition of “class” in his post.
I mean at least he didn’t claim that Obama is White. That’s the sort of category error he makes when discussing Obama’s class.
