I take no joy in this*:
The rock band Rush has sent Kentucky Republican Senate nominee Rand Paul a distant early warning: stop using our music.
Paul, who has quickly stepped into the limelight, used the Rush song “Tom Sawyer” in a Web video, and his campaign has also played “The Spirit of Radio” at a rally. In a far cry from the conservative Paul’s discussion of protecting private property rights, his campaign actually used the libertarian-minded band’s intellectual property without permission, attracting a letter from the band’s lawyer for his attempt to get something for nothing.
The Web video using “Tom Sawyer” has already had its audio track disabled, after a complaint by Rush’s attorney Robert Farmer. “This is not a political issue — this is a copyright issue,” Farmer told the Louisville Courier-Journal. “We would do this no matter who it is.” Farmer also pointed out that Rush are not Americans — they are Canadians, so the squabbles of American politics are not particularly closer to the heart for them.
I have nothing to add, except to note that, even under these nearly-ideal circumstances, it is impossible to make non-contrived amusing references to ”By-Tor and the Snow Dog”. Believe me, I just spent the last 8 hours trying.
* Lie.

I hurd that the wig that Rand’s Mom made prefers Triumph.

Rush clearly did this because they felt it was in Randy’s best interests.

The synch video is really a stretch. The weed must be way more potent these days than back when I was trying to synch Floyd with Oz.

As all Rush followers know, if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
Mr. Paul made his choice, and it was a ****up.

Oh, also: “Tom Sawyer” was turned into a proper track by DJ Q-Bert (and subsequent turntablists) and really, we don’t need Rush anymore since that riff has been perfected through the art of beat-juggling.

I count five, FIVE references in that post.

Each must know his part

Closer to the heart”

Maybe we should start calling Mr. Paul “Cinderella Man.”

Six! Of course!

I count seven. Only song names, though. I’d more convinced of the author’s fandom if there were perhaps a presentation of lyrics, but I should probably forget about my silly whim.

Eds.: I’m getting the impression that your ironic posting of prog rock dreck is not so ironic.
June 4, 2010 at 11:11 am
Whoever said it was ironic? I love prog rock, it’s just that it is also totally ridiculous. Many of my favorite things are pretty ridiculous – that’s part of their charm. I think the fact that I am somewhat embarrassed of my sincere bad taste makes it all right.
Also, it’s way cooler than whatever bullshit you like. That stuff’s horrible.

Regardless, no one is as hip as me, in every single respect.

Had to protect our rep, man.

Your reputation is safe, Kneel Part. Although, and I say this in moderation, Laser Cavity Guy seem to think the Royal We is worth a squirt of wee-wee in a cast-iron bucket, with regard to vanishing and reinventing themselves. Amusing. The Editors can’t exactly disguise themselves from The Employers, but there’s always the slim possibility that The Classmates and The Friends of Friends will suffer the ever-popular *BONK* of amnesia. — Not really, but why flee Texas unless you’re ashamed or trying to jump the counter?
Moderation is a good thing. It sort of postpones the past from popping out like a zit… sometimes… to a certain extent. You’re beautiful, never change.

You really can’t count the quoted song names. Just the other worked-in references, which after I finally caught one I went back and dug out.

Hard to imagine music less appropriate for RePigs…they need to stick with Pat Boone. Scum.

Any wuss can co-opt “Born in the USA” as a totally non-ironic anthem to the lower-middle-class American dream — seriously, did any of Reagan’s wet ends actually listen to the lyrics? Seriously?
I’m waiting for Rush’s “If Your Young Child Dies Under Violent Circumstances, Your Marriage Has About Nine Months to Live,” feat. John “Wizzalsh” Walsh, to make an appearance in some limp dong’s campaign soundtrack. It might be interesting to hear “Thanks for Warning Us About Dead Kid Syndrome, Ayn, You Bag of Pus” on the campaign trail, but I’m not holding my breath.
