Leaving aside the emphatic assertion that Petraeus’ “strategy” in Iraq worked (does he mean “worked” in the sense that Iraq is now one of the most corrupt countries on the planet?, or “worked” in the sense that Iraq is now the least peaceful country on the planet?, or perhaps “worked” in the sense that several extenuating and unrelated events led to a modest reduction in violence?), I found this bit of Petraeus leg humping to be quite the unintentionally hilarious bit:
Lost in the furor over the disgraced Gen. Stanley McChrystal is this simple truth: The counterinsurgency strategy championed by his successor, Gen. David Petraeus, works. [...]
There’s a terrific example of this in Small Wars Journal this morning, and it’s worth a read. Written by two officers of the 2nd Infantry Division’s Stryker Brigade, “Three Cups of Tea and an IED” captures in compelling detail what Petraeus, and the nearly 100,000 U.S. troops under him, hope to accomplish in the next 12 months.
Over numerous cups of chai – just as Greg Mortenson described in his bestseller, “Three Cups of Tea” — the American team of soldiers and representatives of USAID, the State Department and the Department of Agriculture collaborated to support local Afghan leaders in the Arghandab district of Kandahar Province, building security, local government and job opportunities.Tragically, the aging warlord and district governor with whom the team worked was assassinated, but the effort continues.

Her certainly wasn’t blown up because he was working with the US.
Nope.
No way.

It’s brilliant: move on to Afghanistan and declare Iraq won, an example to be followed, Petraeus is now God, and… free burials for everyone! Dead or alive!

And there’s Panetta on the TV Sunday saying that there are 50-100 evil dudes left in Afghanistan. Yet there are 100 thousand American troops there at a cost of a few hundred million dollars per fucking day. How can they say these things with a straight face? I have to assume it’s true, because no one could make that shit up.
Come up with a decent truth or a decent fucking lie.

Awww, an “aging warlord” . . . I can just picture him sitting on his porch in Kandahar, his faithful hound by his side as he strums an old Afghan folk tune on the banjo his pappy handed down to him, soon to be passed along to his devoted warlord son.

The “Petraeus strategy” of THE SUUUUUURGE was indeed successful.
It capitalized upon the successful end of the ethnic cleansing of Baghdad whereas Shi’a forces drove out Sunni civilians from most of their former neighborhoods and Sunni warlords set up their own territories.
It solidified that successful ethnic cleansing campaign by building wall between the separated communities.
It paralleled Sunni and Shi’a forces’ rejection of the bands of nitwits known as “Al Qa’ida in Iraq” which advanced neither of those groups’ goals but who killed a lot of people on behalf of foreign troublemakers.
It successfully made deals to pay off (indirectly) Sunni insurgents from attacking US troops and other targets to the tune of at least $30 million per month.
It successfully created the myth that US forces possess some new counter-insurgency ‘strategy’ which we can now use to fix what looked like massive occupation warlord chaos fuckups, hence we don’t really have a big reason to avoid such huge adventures in the future, because we can fix them.
Finally, it completed its major goals: conducting a gigantic propaganda campaign aimed at the US public and politicians and pundits to undercut massive political pressures to leave Iraq.
Contrast the political pressures for the US to begin leaving Iraq pre- and post-SURGE. Now that is policy success.

Ick. Them hippie folk covers is like the quintessence of why white boys should think twice before trying to sing the blues.
(Kenmeer imagines various hippy folk covers. For example, painting a VW Minibus over a Humvee.)
