What she said:
The attempt to establish a Muslimfrei zone around Ground Zero isn’t about 9/11. The wingnut solicitude for “Dr.” Laura’s supposedly lost First Amendment rights isn’t about “Dr.” Laura’s right to repeat racial slurs on the radio.
Fox News’ relentless pimping of the New Black Panther Party non-story isn’t about voter intimidation. Arizona’s anti-immigration law isn’t about illegal immigration. Breitbart’s Shirley Sherrod smear wasn’t about “reverse racism.”
The persistent suggestions from multiple quarters on the right that President Obama isn’t a Christian or an American aren’t about his religion or nationality. And the Prop 8 campaign wasn’t about protecting straight marriage.
What this is all really about is the most orchestrated, widespread attempt to divide this country since George Wallace’s presidential run. Scratch that—Wallace was never more than a regional candidate. This may be unprecedented in living memory.
I mean, it’s not like the wingnuts complain about mosques being built anywhere else, right? It’s just that 9/11 is such a hallowed event and grounds and too also.

Oh fer feck’s sake. Fixed.

This is common in countries where you see power waning. Whatever people can have in common suppressed is in the interest of control: religion, culture, independent political parties… The spiritual worship of state power becomes a collective duty as well.
Then, in no particular order, the state begins “sponsorship” of media, the public becomes stupider, an enormous waste of resources follows, sometimes including the creation of a new capital, and then with any luck, they’re invaded by an up and coming elite warrior people.

I was just thinking that we need to move the Capitol to Nashville. To be close to real Americans.

What this is all really about is the most orchestrated, widespread attempt to divide this country since George Wallace’s presidential run.
Well, that’s a polite way of putting it.
Surely they don’t think that dividing the country along a line separating conservative white christians from everyone else can be a winning strategy in the long run. I think it’s all about crippling the Obama administration by maintaining a constant swirling shit storm that keeps anything that might improve the economy from even being discussed. Dems and the potentially sane portion of the media just sit and watch in amazement, pretending that what’s happening isn’t what’s happening, and that the mighty wurlitzer is only a figment of dirty hippies’ imaginations.
August 19, 2010 at 5:51 pm
Yah yah yah but the problem is they’re almost certain to win because over here on the progressive left side of things, we got a pony that wants to act lame, and does it so convincingly that soon it will have to ride a wheelchair just like that FDR dude.
Only he wasn’t lame. FDR kicked ass.

“the cackle of divisive assholes”
There’s always some asshole splitting the left cheek from the right, isn’t there?
August 19, 2010 at 5:59 pm
I think we should turn Ground Zero into Limbaugh’s toilet. It just may be big enough.
August 19, 2010 at 7:17 pm
On the bright side, if the teatards vote DC full of lunatics this fall, that should open a <a href="“>vacancy at the state nuthouse for me. If Senators Paul and Angle haven’t cut the funding.
August 19, 2010 at 7:20 pm

Definitely more sensitive to the feelings of his listeners than Dr. Laura.

Digby:
They call him a Muslim — and are quite suddenly lashing out at “his people” almost a decade after 9/11— simply because they aren’t allowed to call him what they want to call him. Sure, they don’t think Muslims are American. They also don’t think liberals are American, blacks are American, Mexicans are America, gays are American, atheists are American or anyone else who doesn’t identify themselves explicitly with them are American. They are, you see, Real America. Everyone else is not.
This stuff is like water — it always finds a way to seep out. Calling Obama a Muslim is just a convenient way of justifying their existing bigotry toward everything he actually is. It’s not really all that complicated.
Bingo.

We were shocked when America voted a former movie star president in ’80. Imagine our surprise when the first shock jock is elected prez in 2016.

It’s never about what it’s about when you want to smear the opposition with the charge of racism. This nation will never get past racism when its fires are constantly stoked by those wielding it as a weapon.
I find it interesting that left-wingnuts come out with such support for an unbuilt facility with no prior history, at that specific location, all on the grounds of religious tolerance, YET say nothing about the NY port authority’s opposition to the REBUILDING of Saint Nicholas Church destroyed in the 9/11 attacks. http://mystateline.com/fulltext-news/?nxd_id=188955
Just love calling people racists, huh?
August 25, 2010 at 6:57 am
Um, that’s becuase the NYPA doesn’t, you know, oppose the rebuilding of the church.
The initial plan was to use state money to build it somewhere else, the two sides disagreed, and now St. Nicks is perfectly within its rights to rebuild. Right there. The NYPA has not opposed their right, or their plan, one iota.
I find it interesting that right wingnuts can only rely on misinformation and lies to support their case.
Just love being a racist, huh?*
(* although in the present example, that wouldn’t be racism as Islam is a religion. You would just be a religious bigot.)

Idiot.
